Why OPRL exists
For years, South African shoppers have faced a confusing mix of recycling icons — many of which don't reflect what's actually recycled here. OPRL fixes that. Aligned with the SA Plastics Pact and global best practice, it tells you the truth about each component of a pack: is it recycled in South Africa, or not?
How the system works
A label is built from individual blocks: an optional source claim (such as recycled content), any special preparation instruction, the packaging component (tray, lidding film, bottle), the recyclability icon, and the material (plastic, paper, metal). The blocks are ordered the way the pack is unpacked. The outcome is binary — RECYCLE or NOT RECYCLED — based on whether the component achieves at least a 30% output recycling rate in South Africa.
